How long have you been in business?
I am starting my third year in business.

What inspired you to start your own cake company?
I’ve know since I was very young that I would own a bakery. When I finally found myself working in a cake shop, I was lucky enough to be among some amazing talents who inspired me and allowed me to develop my own style. Who knew I could use my art skills AND my baking skills together. I figured out pretty quickly that I wanted to specialize in cakes.

Tell us why you think Cake Coquette is successful.
Success comes from a lot of hard work and that is what I do best. When you do your best, people will recognize it and tell others. My business comes entirely from word of mouth so as long as people keep talking, I’m doing alright.

What makes your business unique?
I do a few things that set me apart from other cake designers. Most notably, I’m not a fondant pusher. I can ice cakes very smoothly in buttercream so it looks clean and finished without having to cover all tiers in fondant. Since buttercream is my medium of choice, I offer a signature look of detailed, ornamental buttercream piping that is not common. I still work closely with all my clients so my business is just as much about customer service as it is about design.

Is there a particular niche you target?
I certainly promote myself in the wedding industry, but I am available to any client for any occasion.

What is your company’s philosophy on working with brides and grooms?
I work personally with my brides and grooms. When we meet for our tasting and consultation we talk about the couple’s personal style and how they want to convey it for their wedding. I want them to know that the cake design is inspired from their input. This is such an important event for the couple that I want to make the process as smooth and easy as possible for them.

How do you help couples customize their weddings?
When couples meet with me, they look through my portfolios for inspiration, not to pick cake #12 for me to copy. Every cake I make is customized by using either elements from their personal style or wedding decor. I don’t like to make the same cake over and over again, so I work to create with my clients to make something inspired.

At what point in the wedding cake planning process do you typically work with couples?
In the grand scheme of things, the cake planning is usually the most fun, easiest and last thing the couples get to. I work with the couple through the whole process as the cake decisions are pretty swift and are almost always decided on during our consultation.

Buyer Beware Of Diamond Switching!!!

The Scary Truth About Diamond Shopping and Switching Scams

Couples, please beware of diamond switching! Unfortunately, it is not uncommon for a jeweler to sell you one diamond and when you go back to pick up your beautiful and perfectly sized ring, they have switched the diamond to one that is of lesser quality, full of carbon spots and inclusions … It happened to us!!!

When my husband purchased my engagement ring, he approved and paid for one diamond, but when he picked up the ring…they gave him a diamond that was worth approximately $2000 less than the diamond he paid for! When we confronted the jeweler, they explained that they conveniently sold the diamond to another customer…so, what they’re saying is they basically made off with $2000 from our purchase, because they had no plans of telling us that they switched the diamond!!! That is commonly known as theft…right?!?!

After discussing this issue with family and friends, several people confirmed that diamond switching has happened to them or someone they know. They also talked about how we need to be careful where we get our ring’s cleaned, because diamond switching can happen then too! I’m not talking about “Mom and Pop” jewelry stores either!

We have learned our lesson! In order to protect ourselves, we have a very detailed appraisal (it’s like a “fingerprint” of your diamond) and we do not get our rings cleaned by a jeweler…I clean them at home with a toothbrush and cleaner!!! It actually works very well!!!

Tips on Avoiding the Top 10 Wedding Regrets

Now that the fizz has settled in the champagne glasses and the bouquets have wilted, it is time to reflect on that big day. There is so much planning (some—aka my fiancé— would say “obsessing”) that goes into the wedding; it only makes sense to consult those who have seen the day come and go. Naturally, every bride has her own priorities in a wedding. Each couple is unique and holds different attributes more special. So, when I began to research “bridal regrets” I anticipated very different answers. Surprisingly, the responses were extremely similar. Although this blog is titled the Top 10 Regrets, the top 3 reasons were heard loudly and repeatedly among the others.

Top 10 Wedding Regrets

#10- My dress didn’t fit

This regret centers around those infamous dress fittings. Brides felt that they waited too long to get their dress fittings and being rushed at the end, felt that it wasn’t perfect. The other side of this regret is the last minute weight gain and/or loss. What I learned from this regret was to plan ahead and try to hold steady at your target weight.

#9- My ceremony was too far from my reception site

The logistics of a wedding are truly the most difficult to manage. Trying to remember what vases, candles or favors go to one location compared to the next is difficult to manage. Most brides that had a reception site that was more than 20 minutes from the ceremony said that they were frustrated with all the commuting. Also, many out-of-town guests got lost or disoriented between the two locations.

#8- I should have eloped

Sometimes a wedding takes on a life of its own. It can easily become about the event or out-doing other weddings. In addition, let’s face it… every family has that person that makes you want to elope with the thought of the unannounced toast. The wedding investment should be carefully considered and make sure it is what both the bride and groom want … both now, and 6 months from now.

#7- I wish I wasn’t so obsessed with not seeing my groom before the ceremony

Once that music starts, the wedding is underway! The rest of the day often goes by so quickly, you may want to preserve a quiet moment between the two of you. Sometimes, the only way to make sure that happens, is to do it beforehand. It may also be the only dedicated time you have that day to take some of those bridal portraits you have been dreaming about.

#6- I wish we didn’t leave for our honeymoon so quickly after the wedding

All brides admit that the wedding day goes by faster than they want it to. They often look for any possible way to extend the day. One easy way, is to make sure your honeymoon doesn’t start so immediately. Also, you often pay top dollar for a suite that first night and may not have much time to enjoy it.

#5- I wish I would have been more comfortable at the reception

This is the combination of two retrospective elements: #1. comfortable shoes and #2. knowing how your dress performs in the real world. Take the time to break-in your shoes, and consider comfort when shopping. You will be on your feet basically during the entire affair. Consider that when identifying the perfect shoe. Another issue is a dress that constantly needs to be pulled up, down, sideways, etc. Practice sitting and walking in your dress. And the final piece of advice here… have your friends come with you to a fitting so they know how to bustle the dress before the big day.

#4- I wish I had a video of the wedding

Many brides think it may be vain to have the ceremony on video. They think, “when will I ever watch it” or worse yet…we’ve all been to that person’s home who MADE you watch their wedding video. That alone is enough to make you never want one. But as a bride, you don’t get to see the “big picture” of all the events. Even just having a friend video the day vs. an expensive professional, might be an option.

#3- I should have spent more time with my guests

It’s natural and easy to get caught up in the details and those who demand your attention that day. However, it is important to recognize that your guests have traveled from all over, just for you… just for that day. Be respectful, appreciative and enjoy their participation in your wedding.

#2- I should have spent the money to get a great photographer

When everything is finished, there is only one thing that lives beyond your wedding day—the photos. A wedding day is a wrinkle in time that speeds past you quicker than ever imagined. Having a special, professional way to capture those moments is critical. Every bride that I’ve spoken with who had taken a short cut on photography regretted that choice. It may be the last time all the generations are together, the only time some of these friends will be together or the most beautiful a bride will ever look. All of these reasons demand the best opportunity to preserve the memories. In summary, get a good photographer!

#1- I should have slowed down and enjoyed the day

Plan. Freak out. Be a bridezilla. But when the day arrives… just let it happen. Enjoy your husband, your family, your bridesmaids and most importantly, enjoy yourself. Brides who were focused on the details missed the experience all together. Take it all in. Smile a lot. Look around at all the little things that will make this day so special. It will be over before you know it, and you will be glad you took some time to smell the bouquet.

Inside the Outside Wedding

Outdoor Wedding Ceremony

Important Elements of an Outdoor Wedding Ceremony

I live in the midwest in the Kansas City area. The area is known for its unpredictable weather. Kansas City also is in tornado alley and we get our fair share of severe weather during the months of April, May and June. So why am I taking such a huge risk by having my wedding ceremony outdoors on May 1st? I love spring. I love the sense of new beginnings it brings. The flowers, the trees, the sunshine—it’s the perfect season for a wedding. Don’t get me wrong. I didn’t go into planning my outdoor wedding blindly. Below are just a few things I’ve considered so far in planning my outdoor wedding.

The Backup Plan. One of the first things I considered for my outdoor wedding was a backup plan. If you’re considering an outdoor wedding, it’s great to think you’re getting married outdoors rain or shine, but who really wants their guests to sit through a ceremony soaking wet or in wind tunnel? It is not ideal and your guests will not be happy. Speak with your venue about rain plans. Usually venues can provide great and creative alternatives to outdoor events.

Consider Comfort. Another thing to consider for your outdoor wedding is making sure your guests are comfortable. If your outdoor wedding is during a warm time of year, a great idea is to turn your programs into fans. Guests will be sure to keep cool during the ceremony. If it’s going to be chilly during your wedding, a fun idea is to drape shawls in your wedding colors across the back of chairs so your female guests can wrap one around them if they get chilly. It’s also a great way to dress up your chairs.

Provide Seating. Don’t forgo chairs for your guests. Even if you keep the ceremony short and sweet, guests will want to know where their chairs are. For most venues, you are responsible for renting your own chairs. Check out the rental companies in your area and compare rates. Be sure to ask about the set up and take down and if there is an additional charge.

Simple Décor. One good thing about an outdoor ceremony is, depending on your venue, décor can be minimal. If you’re going to be on the grass, you can easily dress up your pews with pomanders on shepherd’s hooks. Since my ceremony is outdoors and my wedding is indoors, I’ve planned the décor in a way that it can be used both indoors and outdoors (just incase!).

Appropriate Attire. Your wedding attire should go with the theme of your outdoor wedding. If you’re having an outdoor wedding in the spring or summer, why not choose light weight fabrics or light colored suits. Also, as the bride, you certainly don’t want to stand outside in the heat sweating in a heavy dress with tons of tulle.

Let it Happen. Finally, I plan on trying not to stress about the weather. It is something beyond my control and I’ve already accepted that the wedding may need to be indoors. Even if you have your heart set on having your wedding outdoors, don’t be too disappointed or let it ruin your special day if it’s not. The most important thing is that you are marrying your soul mate and in the end, it doesn’t matter whether you say your “I dos” outside or in.

1. How has your website been most helpful in planning your wedding?
We are having a Florida wedding. Our parents have retired there, but all the rest of the guests are coming from out of town. Our website has helped us provide our guests with important information about the wedding.

2. How did you customize your website?
We used our color scheme and pictures of us, our family and friends.

3. What was your favorite feature?
I like the ease of customizing our site and the variety of design options. It was easy to create a totally customized site- all the way down to our exact colors. I think guests like being able to learn more about us via our personal pages. It is also great as a practical medium to get the information to guests.
