Art in Destination Wedding Photos
Glen Johnson is this week’s Macro Monday featured photographer. Glen is a photographer who gladly travels the world beautifully capturing brides and grooms during one of the most special times in their life. He considers his work as a type of storytelling, saying “I’ve come to see my storytelling almost as a performance art. It’s not something that comes naturally to anyone. It takes a lot of practice at reading people and events so that you know when something interesting is about to happen and you can get ready for it. If you’re not standing in the right spot with your camera up to your face, before it happens, you’ve missed it! The ability to read people and anticipate an event, and then manage to get yourself into position in time to catch the action – that really is an art.”
Although Glen does like working locally, he can’t deny how amazing it is to have the unique experience of photographing a destination wedding. Over the past 4 years, about 75% of his work has been outside of the U.S. Today he is sharing a recent wedding shot in Amalfi, Italy. Editha and James Boynton (Dee & Jim) were married at a stunning villa overlooking the sea … an absolutely breathtaking location.
Glen: “Shooting a Destination wedding typically provides far more time for the couple and the photographer to be together. It isn’t unusual for the entire wedding party, all of the guests and myself, to share a villa together for 3 or 4 days surrounding the event. You really get to know the couple during that amount of time and it isn’t unusual for them to change from clients to friends somewhere along the way.”
On the day of the wedding, Glen carefully spent his time capturing all of the details as well as photographing the beautiful location. Along with shooting the ceremony and reception, Glen was able to steal the couple away for some photos of a sunset walk around the villa. Dee and Jim even got up at 6:00 am the next day to redo hair and makeup in order to have a 2 hour photo session in the early morning light in Ravello, a nearby town.
Check out the slide show of this beautiful wedding on the coast of Italy. Congratulations Dee and Jim!!
Glen: “Thank you Dee & Jim for bringing me to such an amazing place. And I want to thank you also for all of your hospitality. You really made me feel totally welcome in your family and I simply cannot say how good that felt. You all treated me like a friend and a very special guest and I can only hope that the art WE produced together will serve as a lasting thank you for the gifts you shared with me.”
Thank you Glen for sharing your work and letting us see this wedding and Amalfi through your lens!
