Flower Power! The Symbolism of Flowers

I often wonder how brides decide which flowers they will incorporate into their wedding day. I, personally, consider flowers to be one of the most important aspects of any wedding. But there are truly thousands of varieties to choose from…how is a bride to decide? Should your decision be based solely on color, seasonal availability, personal preference, tradition or perhaps something a bit more meaningful? When I began researching bridal flower trends, I discovered that each and every type of flower has an actual meaning.

Want to know more? Below is a list of the most popular flower meanings:

Tis’ the Season to Give and to Be Loved …

Ideas for Unique Engagement Ring Boxes

Many couples get engaged during the holiday season. This is a season for family, friends, love, and growing together as one. This post is an inspirational message for those who are ready to pop the big question, and more importantly, this post is about one very important box!

The Comedian: As a practical joke, give her the gift of coal, showing her that she has been a very bad girlfriend. When she opens up this coal inspired box, seeing a diamond ring will be a wonderful surprise. Directions to this craft ring box can be found at www.marthstewart.com. If this seems above your craft skill level, think about giving actual coal as her gift, and then giving the love of your life her ring box to open.

The Modernist: After finding the perfect ring, most guys will just give their future fiancées the free ring box as a keepsake for their bride. If this doesn’t sound like you, think about having a custom ring box made. This wooden engraved ring box will surely be memorable for any bride–to-be.

The Romantic: A very cute way to ask anyone’s hand in marriage is to let them eat cake! Give your loved one a deliciously sweet dessert on a handcrafted ceramic plate with the words “Will You Marry Me?” After eating dessert, your bride-to-be will receive her real Holiday Gift. And the best part of all, you two can also use this plate in the wedding as your ring bearer pillow. How cute.

The Traditionalist: Of course, nothing could be better than getting a little blue Tiffany box. Making a surprise trip to your loved one’s home, during the holidays, to pop the question; how sweet, and simply irresistible.

Featured Photographer – The Shooting Gallery

Wedding Photographer Showcases Creative Work

Dionne Haglund of The Shooting Gallery is this week’s featured photographer. The Shooting Gallery does wedding and portrait photography and is based in Michigan. Dionne shoots local weddings and will also travel wherever needed for destination weddings. Since she was young, her camera has been at her side wherever she goes. Although originally interested in television production, Dionne took a few photography courses during college and realized that it was actually the still image that truly captured her interest.

The master in the art of living makes little distinction between his work and his play, his labor and his leisure, his mind and his body, his information and his recreation, his love and his religion. He hardly knows which is which. He simply pursues his vision of excellence at whatever he does, leaving others to decide whether he is working or playing. To him, he is always doing both.” –Zen Buddhist

Dionne:” The quote above does more than merely describe my outlook on the path I’ve chosen in life, it explains it in a way I never could. Photography is my one true passion and has been for many years.”

Today we have Lauren and Andrew MacKellar’s wedding, photographed by Dionne and The Shooting Gallery. I love the softness in these bridal portraits!

Wine Country Wedding Inspirations for Every Palette

One of my favorite wedding inspirations is wine! So many ideas come from vineyards, bottles, barrels, wine glasses, grapes, corks and more! So this week, I took a look at wine-inspired weddings for every color palette—and for every wine palate.

Traditional wine-inspired weddings often use the hue of grapes—purples, plums, greens and golds.

Blue is another great color to intertwine with a vineyard-themed wedding, whether it is a deep, rich blue or more of a teal green-blue.

Similar to the plum colors, pink can also be a fabulous way to style your wine country wedding. And the combination of pinks and greens is very popular!

I also love these inspiration boards found on Style Me Pretty that use pinks and corals combined with green and citrusy colors to achieve a wine-inspired affair.

Oranges and reds can be used for a bold take on the wine-inspired wedding.

And last but definitely not least, the browns. Use shades of brown, mahogany, taupe and tan to inspire feelings of corks, barrels and cellars.

Eco-Friendly Wedding Favors

For my wedding, I decided to make small ceramic tiles to give to each guest as a favor. This was no small feat, even with a pottery background and access to a ceramic studio and kiln. Before I decided to take on that crazy project, I found some great ideas for eco-friendly favors like live plants or organic candy. Here are some suggestions for earth friendly projects that your guests will surely appreciate.

Organic Chocolate Bar Favors
Endangered Species Chocolate offers 100% all natural ingredients including ethically traded cacao beans that are sourced and harvested from small family-owned properties. They also donate 10% of their net profits to environmental organizations that work to help endangered species and their habitats.

The Wildflower Seed Packet Favor
Your guests can add beauty to their yard with wildflowers grown from these seed favors. Botanical PaperWorks has 6 colors to choose from and will print the packets with your own custom text.

Organic Handmade Soap Favors
This customized handmade soap from unearthmalee is all natural, made from organic extra virgin olive oil, organic coconut oil, and organic shea butter without any chemical preservatives, parabens, or synthetic fragrances. And, the personalized labels are printed on seeded paper for your guests to grow wildflowers after your wedding.

Small Plant Favors
What could be more eco-friendly than giving a live plant to each guest? Kelly at Yes, Please shares some amazing photos and her experience making these cute succulent favors for her own wedding. She also sells them online at Succulent Love.

Donation Favor
Of course, you can always make a donation to your favorite environmental charity in lieu of favors. You can then print the details of the donation on recycled or even plantable seed paper, like these scrolls from Plant a Bloomer.
