Think Outside the Box: 10 DIY Decor Ideas

Attention DIY-ers! This post is for you! WedLoft recently rounded up a list of 101 DIY Wedding Projects. We covered the board and provided you with DIY ideas for all areas of your wedding … all in one place!

Today, however, I’m going to ask you to work a little. DON’T WORRY! I’m not asking you to do any heavy lifting, research or even to get out of your chair. I’m simply asking that you let your imagination wander a bit. The 10 DIY ideas I have for you today were not designed as wedding projects. And so …I’d like you to Think Outside the Box! Each of these projects can easily be transformed to fit seamlessly into your wedding. These are my ideas for working these projects into a wedding, but if you have others … please share in the comments! I’d love to hear what you think :)

1. Heart Shaped Photo Display – I saw this project shown as bedroom wall decor on MarieClaireIdees but I think it would be wonderful for a wedding.  If you have an empty wall space to fill, this is certainly an exciting way to do it!  It would be a great way to display engagement photos, photos of you and your love throughout your relationship, or even pictures of wedding guests! If your venue doesn’t want you putting holes in the wall (which is a definite possibility), this look can be achieved effortlessly using lightweight mats and a nonpermanent adhesive that can easily be peeled off.

2. Sea Life Decor – This wonderful DIY idea would make excellent decor for a beach wedding! I saw this tutorial over on Ucreate and thought it would be a perfect addition to this list of DIY wedding decor ideas. All you need to do is go out and find (or buy if you need to) some pretty shells and/or items from the sea and hot clue them into a candlestick base! Simple. No? And take a peek at how lovely they look!

3. Wall Candies – I came across this idea on Parents.com. These wall candies were decorations for a Candy Land themed birthday party. They are VERY easy to make and would be an adorable decoration to go with a wedding candy bar! Hang them on the wall near the bar or even attach the candy decorations along the front of the table.

Hanging Paper Spheres – These decorations I found on Ladybird Ladybird were made to dress up a craft space.  Just think how fun these would be hanging around your reception venue!  Find some funky paper patterns in your wedding colors and you’re good to go!

5. Upcycled Bunting -This bunting was made as an Easter decoration on PoppyTalk … but with different cut-out shapes and fabric in your wedding colors, it would be a lovely decoration for your wedding day!

6. Book Page Decor – I saw this idea by Cathy of California and thought it would make an excellent DIY wedding project!  All you need are paper lanterns, old books and glue …

7. Scrapbook Paper Pack Backdrop - This project was originally for making fun wall paper, on Carma.se, but it could be used in a wedding in a number of ways.  With a pack of scrapbook paper that matches your wedding colors, you could create a backdrop for your ceremony or a DIY photobooth.  You could even use it to cover a table top for a dessert, favor or gift table.

These next few ideas require a little more work …

8. Scrap Pallet Plank Backdrop – Here is another idea for a wedding backdrop.  Again, it could be used in a number of ways; ceremony backdrop, photobooth backdrop or even a free standing wall to hold a heart shaped photo display (why not??). I saw this project on Poppytalk as it was used for a plank wall. If you have the time and energy, go ahead and take the planks apart and make your backdrop from scratch.  Otherwise, here is my idea … Forget taking the pallets apart and connect the pallets as is.  If you’re just looking for a fun wood backdrop, that should do just fine!

9. Swinging Table – This idea would be a great playful element to add to an intimate backyard wedding. Found over at the incredible Hostess with the Mostess blog, this DIY tutorial is simple and sweet.

10. Distressed Wood Sign – Ok, this idea includes two tutorials. The first for the distressed wood was found on Love and Olive Oil and the second for stenciling I saw over at The Girl on the Go. This decor item could be used anywhere in your wedding.  You could create signs for directions (ceremony this way), signs to label certain things (sweets table) or you could make signs with words or monograms on them.  You could even use this idea to make distressed looking table numbers.

Why So Blue?

Let’s face it, deep blue’s are stunning and what better way to incorporate beautiful blue hues than on your wedding day.  I love the collages pictured below that blend the blue’s so well together.

You can be very creative with the “something blue” tradition when your entire wedding is accented with blue.  There are so many options when using a strong, powerful color such as blue.

I love the ballet flats featured in this collage.  The monogram stamp is absolutely adorable as well!  The table setting with beautifully wrapped gifts is an added bonus for this amazing color pallet.

You can also play around with beautiful floral arrangements in blue.  I also adore the blue umbrella’s below.

View-Master Weddings

Does anyone remember their beloved View-Master toy as a child? This classic toy is making a comeback! These fun View-Masters are making their way into the wedding world. Many couples are incorporating the classic toy into their own weddings as fun detail  … and a way to customize!

If you are not sure what a View-Master is, it shows stereo images (3-D photos) through the toy … and brides and grooms are using them in all stages of their wedding. From their engagement photos to their invitations, couples are incorporating this well known classic into some super fun wedding details. You could give out personalized View-Masters as wedding favors … Think about handing out custom made View-Masters full of sentimental photos of the happy couple. Great idea!

The image below is from a couple that used View-Masters for their Save the Dates. The couple had reels made that included 3d photos of themselves, other vintage toys and their wedding location and date. Each of their wedding quests received a package in the mail which included a View-Master and the Save the Date reel. What a great way to inform your guests about your wedding! If you’re interested in creating your own custom ViewMaster reel for your wedding, here are a couple of good sites to check out … Image 3D which allows you to upload digital photos for the reel and Studio 3D where you can upload digital photos or rent a 3D camera.

I couldn’t resist sharing this last detail with you! The photo shown below displays the genius idea of incorporating ViewMaster style photos into a wedding ring! Luke Jerram made this ring for his wife.  Isn’t this just the best?  I don’t think a ring could be more personalized!  You can read more about the ring here.  He also created a “Talking Ring” as an engagement ring.  The ring has a 20 second message (his proposal) etched onto it’s surface and can be played back with a miniature record player. Check it out here.

Etiquette Emergency: Married Monograms

wedding monogram

Q: I have a quick question that I can’t seem to find an answer for in any of the etiquette books and sites I’ve checked out. My name now is Melinda Mary Smith. After I marry, I will be hyphenating my name with my fiancé’s, so my full name will be Melinda Mary Smith-Jones. How do I handle my new initials, especially for things like monograms? I really value my maiden name and want it to remain part of my name. Should it be M.M.J.?

A: If you decide to hyphenate your name, your initials will remain MMS. In order for you to have four initials, you would have to add your husband’s name without the hyphen, becoming MMSJ. The other choice, which is rather popular among modern women, is to drop your middle name and have your maiden name become your new middle name. Using this formula, you would become Melinda Smith Jones. And your initials would be MSJ.
