Kristen Janes is the founder/owner of Kio Kreations, LLC a boutique event florist and creative services company specializing in wedding flowers & decor. Her background is diverse and includes a BFA in Illustration, a four year career as a product designer and over 15 years spent as a professional floral designer.

After working in three floral shops throughout the years and finishing her fine art degree, Kristen decided that she really enjoyed making flowers for weddings and events. She knew she wanted to pursue Kio Kreations Wedding & Event Floral as a side career while she worked as a product designer in the corporate world. While working as a product designer, Kristen designed hundreds of wedding items, many of which can be purchased around the country at Michael’s, JoAnn’s, Target and Wal-mart stores. She also designed wedding packaging, styled photo shoots and created wedding trend guides.

Meanwhile, Kio Kreations, (which had started as a side career with one wedding the first year), had become a full-time business with over 60 weddings annually just 4 years later. Kristen decided to leave her product design career behind and dedicate her time solely to her ever-blooming Kio Kreations.

What makes Kio Kreations even more unique than other florists is that Kristen combines her graphic and floral design passions into one. Not only does she offer stunning floral creations but also a variety of custom paper products and other decor items like monogrammed aisle runners. Making for a truly unique, well-coordinated, amazing event.

Recently, Kristen’s work has been featured in two issues of The Knot Chicago Magazine, Brides Chicago Magazine and on a variety of national wedding blogs including Style Me Pretty, Ruffled, Hostess with the Mostess, Elizabeth Anne Designs, The Sweetest Occasion, Kara’s Party Blog, Glamour & Grace Blog, The Wedding Chicks, Poptastic Bride, Brenda’s Wedding Blog, and Style Unveiled Chicago.

Flower-Adorned Locks

Many brides opt for a flower in their ‘do instead of (or after) wearing a veil. While there are thousands of flowers out there that are perfect for a wedding, there are only a few that work well in wedding hair.

Some of the most popular choices include cymbidium orchids, phaleanopsis orchids, dendrobium orchids and gardenias. Of these choices, white phaleanopsis and gardenias are extremely fragile. They need to be handled with care, actually, with gloves if possible, as your fingers can cause bruising on the blooms. They also will have a tendency to wilt within 6 hours of having them put in your hair. This is true of most fresh flowers used as they are no longer in water, so unless the flowers are fake or dried, they are not going to last all day and night.

I have also used spray roses in clusters in hair before, but they have the same wilting issue. Full-size roses are often too heavy and pokey to work well in hair and things like peonies and hydrangea will wilt within an hour or two of putting them in the hair.

I also suggest having a professional hair stylist add the flowers to your wedding day hairdo, so it is important to get the hair flowers delivered while you are getting ready. They will most likely come bagged and can be kept in a fridge (not a freezer) until they are ready to use. If you are using orchids, they prefer less cold temperatures than most flowers, so they are better to keep in a drawer towards the bottom of the fridge and not for an extended amount of time. Flowers should never be kept at the top of the fridge where the air comes out–too much direct cold air can freeze the flowers. This is also true of corsages and boutonnieres. I can’t tell you how many high school boys used to come in to the flower shops I worked in having frozen their dates’ corsages. After a frozen flower defrosts, it turns to mush…not a good look for prom–or a wedding for that matter!

Of course, flowers in hair are not limited to the bride. Flower Girls also look adorable with floral wreaths or blooms in their hair! How cute are these little ladies?!

Art Museum-Worthy Centerpieces

One of my favorite 2012 clients is getting married at The Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) in Chicago this summer and I am very excited to do some wildly artistic centerpieces for her wedding. We will be modeling the color palette after whatever the art installation that month will be, and all of the centerpieces will look like fabulous works of art. When researching inspiration for this wedding, I came across a lot of art museum-worthy floral creations. My favorite ones are featured below.

Fabulous Pavé Wedding Flowers

The term “pavé” is French for “paved” and basically describes floral looks that are completely covered with flowers having a relatively uniform profile. Everything is packed tightly together, for a lush, textural look. Wondering where you might have seen this look before? Well, this is the method used when they make those Rose Bowl Parade Floats, but also works well for creating unique wedding arches, centerpieces, pomanders, and escort card flower beds.

Pavé flowers can be all one type–like a mass of carnations OR they can be a mixture of blooms, textures and foliages all similar in overall height. This method is also used when making flower-covered monograms, wreaths, pomanders, and floral ring bearer pillows.

A Weed By Any Other Name…

2012 wedding flower trends

There are a lot of flowers out there that our mothers and grandmothers might refer to as “weeds” but {surprisingly} some of them can actually function as beautiful wedding flowers. My favorites include Queen Anne’s Lace, Thistle/Eryngium, Scabiosa and Scabiosa Pods. These weedy blooms are totally trend-on and perfect for combining with more traditional flowers to create a unique, textural mix for both wedding bouquets and centerpieces.

Fabulous Fabric Flowers + 2 DIY Projects

fabric flower wedding details

Photo Credit: Tara Etrheim | Kio Kreations & RBK Creations

As a florist, fresh flowers are of course my favorite thing to work with–but lately I also am loving fabric, lace and ribbon flowers–especially when mixed in with real blooms! I also love seeing them worked into necklaces, wrist corsages, ring pillows and fascinators. They have a much more unique, one-of-a-kind look than silk flowers, they hold together better than dried flowers, they are fancier than paper flowers and they last way longer than fresh flowers–so what’s not to love?! I have collected some of my favorite fabric flower looks below. There are some made of satin, organza, felt, lace, ribbon and other miscellaneous fabric materials–but the one thing they have in common is they are all awesome!!!

Did I mention I have included some DIY projects below on how to make them? Well–I did, so ENJOY!
