DIY Burlap banners are a great way to incorporate handmade, rustic looking decor into your wedding celebration. Today I have an easy tutorial for creating customized banners to hang at your wedding or use as props in your photos.
Step 1: Trace & Cut – Grab a round object from around the house, in the size you’d like your banner pieces to be, and trace onto the burlap. I used a cereal bowl. If you’re spelling out a word, which we are in this tutorial, make enough circles for each letter. Cut out each of your circles.
Step 2: Stencil – If you already have stencils, you can certainly use those. I didn’t have any that I wanted to use for this project so I made my own. To do so, grab your card stock paper and trace the same amount of circles for each letter. Draw a letter on each paper circle and cut them out with a x-acto knife. Now you have a set of stencils that are custom made for your project!
Step 3: Paint – Place your first stencil over your a piece of burlap and paint! Be sure to hold your stencils down as flat as possible (unlike me in the photo below. tsk, tsk!). This will give you crisp edges to your paint. Remove your stencil. Repeat for each piece/letter of your banner.
Step 4: Arrange & Glue – Now that all pieces are stenciled and ready to go, arrange them in order to spell the word. Overlap the edges a little bit and glue them together with hot glue. You will end up with one piece.
Step 5: Now, simply hot glue some yarn or string straight across the back of the entire piece and your banner is ready to hang!
You can also easily make a traditional triangle bunting banner in similar fashion. Here’s how…
Follow steps 1 through 3 above. Only instead of circles, make triangles.
For the final step, glue your yarn on the back about a half inch down from the top of each piece. Fold the edge down over the yarn and hold until secured by the glue. Be sure to leave enough yarn on each end to be able to hang your banner!
