Since custom signs are one of my favorite wedding details, I’d like to share a tutorial for making your own DIY wedding signs! If you want a wedding sign that will pop out a little more than a flat painted sign, this DIY project might be the perfect fit for you!
I’ve always been a fan of String and Nail art and have seen so many different styles. This project is simple and easy to tweak to create your own custom designs to fit in with your wedding decor.

Materials
Wood
Nails (regular or roofing nails)
Hammer
Paint & Paint brush
Embroidery Thread, Yarn, Jute Twine
Eye Hooks
Scissors
PAINTED NAIL SIGNS
Step 1: Draw – Draw or stencil your design lightly onto the wood. For this tutorial I used a heart shape. But these signs are also great for monograms, table numbers, welcome signs, and more!

Step 2: Nail – You can do a single line of nails or double it up for a bold effect. When you’re finished nailing, go back in and erase your pencil lines if they are noticeable.

Step 3: Paint– Using the color of your choice, paint the tops of the nails… and you’re done! If you plan on hanging your sign, see step 4 below.

STRING & NAIL SIGNS
Step 1: Draw – Again, start by lightly drawing or stenciling your design onto the wood.

Step 2: Nail – For string designs the nails can be placed further apart so more of the string will show. I also recommend using regular nails rather than roofing nails since there will be more focus on the string. If you can see your pencil lines, this is a good time to go back in and erase.

Step 3: String – Since I used smaller nails this time, I decided to use embroidery thread as the string. You can use whatever you’d prefer for this step – thin rope, yarn, twine, etc. Tie a knot around the first nail. Then wrap your string around each nail as you go. Continue around your design and finish by tying a knot around the same nail you started with.

Step 4: Hang – Measure an even distance in from each side and screw in your eye hooks. I placed mine an inch and a half in. Then, cut off a length of your jute twine and tie each and to your eye hooks. And now you’re ready to hang your sign!

You can mix and match and create all different styles of signs for your wedding day. Use only small nails and embroidery thread or combine painted roofing nails and yarn… have fun and create your own custom designs! These signs are cute to use in your engagement or wedding photos too! Or, place them at your ceremony and reception for added decor.
