Engraved wedding bands are a lot like promises that are usually made to your special someone. Before you set your engraving in metal, here are just a few styles and ideas to consider.
- Short and Sweet : There’s an entire array of messages to choose from. An obvious choice would be romantic engravings. A simple “I Love You” or “Happily Ever After” can melt the heart. Some couples opt to go the more sentimental route with wedding dates or each other’s initials. A quirkier couple might go for humor with phrases like “Taken,” “Nonrefundable” and “Put it Back On” (this one can really help absentminded partners).
- Longer Inscriptions: Sadly, it would be difficult to fit Shakespeare sonnets on one band. The most legible engravings tend to be a few words. Skilled jewelers can push the engraving to two lines; it would be extremely difficult to make out anything beyond one sentence. Just keep in mind that because of the greater attention to detail, longer inscriptions tend to be more expensive. Song lyrics and quotes tend to be popular choices.
- A Loss for Words: Some couples have no words (literally) to describe how they feel about each other. Unique engraving trends include fingerprints, symbols and other graphics. For instance, a music loving couple might go with music notes versus an engraving like “Harmony” or “Making Music” because pictures can be worth a thousand words.
- Positioning: Traditionally, engravings have been limited to the inside of the band. However, you don’t have to keep your engraving an insider’s secret if you don’t want to. More engravings are being done on the outside edges of the band. Couples are also opting for top surface engravings. Amazingly, you can sometimes get away with more than one line of text along the top surface.
Engravings can feel daunting because they feel so permanent. Think carefully about what you love and what you love as a couple. You’ll eventually pick out the perfect engraving for you – pinky promise.
