Money Thanks …

Q: My fiancé and I are moving overseas right after we get married, so we expect the bulk of our gifts to be money. How do we thank our guests for their generosity? Do we specify the amount given? Do we say it went into a fund for household items or try to match an item to the value? What about big ticket items where many guests may have contributed?

A: Thank you notes are acknowledgements. When they involve a monetary amount, there is no need to be specific either about the amount they gave or what it will be used for going forward. A sample thank you note for cash or a check reads as follows: Dear Aunt & Uncle ~ We are just so glad you were able to attend our wedding and help us celebrate our marriage. Thank you so much for the generous check. It will be put to good use as we begin to building our lives together overseas. We hope you will be able to visit us sometime soon! ~ Much love …

Q: For various reasons too lengthy to mention here, our wedding is starting at 10:45 in the morning. Do you have any suggestions for how to word this time on the invitation? I have seen examples for on the hour or half past, but nothing for 10:45.

A: My first suggestion would be to say “at half after ten o’clock” because guests are notoriously late and then begin at 10:45. If you do want to be more specific, you can always use “at a quarter before eleven o’clock” on the invitation.
