If you’ve been to a wedding in the past five years or so (and you’re reading this, so I assume you have), you’ve probably encountered a couple who opted to forgo registering for china and linens and instead divided up their honeymoon into pieces that could be “purchased” for them. For couples who have their household goods in order or who have an adventurous spirit, the honeymoon registry offers a great way to send the message that all they really want is a chance to get away (and who doesn’t after all the work and excitement of a wedding?).
If you’re thinking of putting a honeymoon registry together, there are a few ways to do this, and a few things you should consider. The most common kind of registry allows people to pay for airfare, lodging, meals and activities you’ll be doing on your honeymoon (or divides the cost of those items into guest-friendly increments of $50 or $100). Companies that provide this service – like The Honeymoon and The Big Day – act like travel agents with a registry service. Conveniently, you arrive on your honeymoon with activities and things paid for, but in the process, the company will collect a fee – generally 8-9% of the cost of each item (so a guest who wants to give you a gift worth $100 will need to spend almost $110).
Alternatively, hotel companies are getting into the game with registries that help you plan a trip among their resorts. Marriott, Starwood and Sandals have all launched programs to encourage engaged couples to register, and stay, with them. One of the perks of this method is your gifts usually come in the form of flexible credits to be used among the resort and its affiliated partners.
There are free alternatives that allow you to customize where you want to go and where you want to stay. HoneyFund calls itself “the completely free honeymoon registry,” because it doesn’t collect fees for the items guests purchase. However, the purchases make their way to the engaged couple in the form of a check or a deposit into their PayPal account.
If you’re looking to provide some creative ideas to your guests who want to give you something interesting and memorable, a honeymoon registry is a great way to do this. Chances are you’ll never forget who got you that fabulous dinner or couples massage!
