Everybody knows that signature drinks are all the rage at weddings these days, right? After all, it is a great way to personalize your wedding reception and ensure that your guests are not only entertained, but well hydrated. However, in reality, selecting a signature drink that is unique and that also represents you as a couple can be easier said than done. I mean, the possibilities are seemingly endless and you probably don’t know where to even begin..cue panic attack. Ok, breathe! If you too are struggling to develop a signature drink for your big day, consider the following basics to get you started.
Theme and location of your wedding – Are you having a casual clam bake on a beach in Cape Cod? Planning an elegant reception at a vineyard in Sonoma? Hosting 500 guests at a castle in Scotland? In what City, State or Country will your wedding take place? Consider the reception venue itself. Select a signature drink that reflects your reception venue, family heritage, wedding theme and colors, personal style as a couple, or all of the above!
Wedding colors – Keep in mind, most colors can be recreated in the liquid form. If you don’t have the slightest clue how to go about creating a drink that is the perfect Robin’s Egg Blue, don’t stress. You need not go it alone. Ask your local bartender for advice. He or she will be more than happy to suggest liquors and/or beverages based on a few basics: color, taste (sweet, fruity, savory), temperature (hot/cold), etc. Many liquor manufacturer websites also offer helpful search tools that allow you to quickly and easily search different cocktail recipes. We found the Absolute website to be a great resource. Their search tool allows you to browse drinks by: Base Spirit (Vodka, Rum, Gin, etc.), Taste (Sweet, Fruity, Spicy, etc.), Type (New & Trendy, Martini Drinks, Frozen Drinks, etc.), and Occasion (Afternoon, Evening, Pre-Dinner, etc.).
Keep it simple – For your own piece of mind (aka sanity), do yourself a favor and select a cocktail recipe that can be easily prepared by ANYONE. Although the extravagant signature cocktail that you created in your kitchen at 2 am, requiring 7 liquors, 2 juices, 4 herbs and a PhD in Chemistry, sounded like a good idea at the time. If it cannot be exactly duplicated by your event caterer or bartender, or worse yet…tastes like an old shoe, what’s the point of having a signature cocktail at all? So, be sure to document all of the ingredients and measurements when you settle on the winning concoction. Trust me, you do not want any surprises at the reception.
Don’t forget the garnish – You can really take your signature drink to the next level by adding a simple garnish. You could select a favorite fruit, herb, or flower from your bouquet or table centerpieces (make sure they’re edible though!). A garnish serves as eye candy and it also adds flavor to a drink.
$$$$/Have a budget in mind – I know, I know…it’s next to impossible to predict how many drinks each guest will actually consume. So, if you are concerned that your Uncle Frank will drink you out of house and home or you would simply prefer to direct your hard earned money elsewhere, consider offering your specialty drinks during the cocktail hour only. This will help limit your guests’ alcohol consumption. You can also request for your wedding planner, caterer and/or bartender to let you or a member of your bridal party know when you’ve reached your pre-set limit. Let’s face it, you probably don’t want to spend your wedding night washing dishes to pay off your “bagillion” dollar bar bill, right? `Nuff said!
Alcohol Free Weddings – If you’re not planning to serve alcohol at your reception, no problem! Simply create your own mocktails instead! This will also help keep your beverage budget in check.
Essentially, no matter what you choose to serve, a signature drink will add another personal element to your day and your soiree will surely be remembered for years to come! You can make them your own by personalizing the drink name itself or by simply changing the color of the cocktail by adding or subtracting ingredients.
