What inspired you to start your business?
I used to work in a cubicle. Whew, just thinking about that gives me the chills. I tell people all the time, growing up you always heard those top 5 things you should be (doctor, lawyer, etc.) no one ever tells you that you could actually have a job doing something you love. After 7 years in the corporate world, I took the plunge and started Blue Eyed Yonder. It was probably one of the most terrifying and, at the same time, exhilarating things I have ever done.
I come from a long line of collectors, I guess it’s in my genes. I’ve always loved scouring old barns full of treasures or picking through pieces at flea markets. I often thought of having my own antique store, but there was just one teeny problem… I didn’t want to sell anything! So, I decided I would rent out my collection and Blue Eyed Yonder was born.
If you could give one tip to couples who are planning a wedding, what would it be?
Be yourself. I’ve often noticed in the wedding world, things start to all look the same. I always encourage brides to really think about their wedding as a personal reflection of themselves. Try to incorporate sentimental details and items that are special and dear to your heart. You want a memory that will stand the test of time and feel “right” years and years down the road.
Is there a particular niche you target?
I’m always looking for brides that are brave and not afraid to dream and jump at the chance to create something beautiful.
It makes me kind of smile to myself when people say they’re tired of “vintage”. Yes, we’ve all seen weddings where there’s a vast display of antique knick-knacks randomly displayed and called “vintage,” however at Blue Eyed Yonder I work to show people vintage is so much more than that. Saying you’re tired of vintage is basically saying your tired of history. While the term “vintage” has been wildly abused by the wedding world, I believe true vintage never goes out of style. It’s constantly changing – what’s vintage today will be different from what’s considered vintage 10 years from now.
Vintage to me is a nod to the past, whether it be worn furniture from a 1930’s farm house or sleek mid-century pieces from the 1960’s. I don’t think you can pigeon hole vintage pieces into one specific look, that would be boring. I’m constantly challenging myself to create a myriad of moods using vintage pieces. Our collection spans decades and it really is possible to create a rustic wedding on the farm one weekend and a stylish wedding at an art gallery the next.
What is your one must-have item/product/tool to have on-hand when you’re working?
Comfortable clothes! When you’re constantly shlepping furniture and other odds and ends around, sometimes your best friend can be a basic pair of leggings and comfortable shoes.
5 Things that make you happy?
My awesome dog, Dottie Mae. She’s totally our fur child.
Crushed Ice. Sometimes it’s the simple things.
Traveling. Anywhere and everywhere with my husband.
Antiquing. It fuels me and always leaves me wanting more.
Dreaming. I don’t think my brain ever sleeps. Seriously.
What is your personal favorite color used in weddings?
I’ve always been a huge fan of neutrals for weddings. There somethings so soothing and almost ethereal about it.
On your day off you can be found…
Cruising backroads with my pup’s head hanging out the window looking for hidden treasures, good eats and magical places.
Wedding Cake, cupcakes, or a candy/cookie bar? Which is your personal fave?
I’m such an ol’ fashioned girl, I love the tradition of a wedding cake. It’s just so sweet and simple.
