Good morning brides! Today I have another fabulous wedding vendor to introduce you to! Kelle Anne McCarter is the owner and designer of Designs Girl, a company that specializes in graphic design and gorgeous calligraphy. Kelle loves working with couples to create custom invitation designs as well as hand lettered invitations and envelopes. We recently grabbed Kelle for a Q&A to help you get to know her. Meet Designs Girl below!
What inspired you to start your business?
I had always been fascinated with calligraphy but when I saw the work of San Francisco shop Bell’ occhio’s in-house calligrapher in the book “Calling Cards” by Victoria Magazine, I was smitten. This was the precise moment when knew I wanted to be a calligrapher.
Is there a particular niche you target?
My business includes an online paper goods shop called “hello love” and an annual specialty art magazine called “paperswell: modern design ideas for paper goods and weddings”. These creative endeavors, along with my calligraphy and design work, hopefully appeal to brides and lovers of paper goods, correspondence and design. My magazine partner Laura Dombrowski and I describe our projects as a celebration of design, letterpress, stationery, books, crafts, paper goods, weddings, and photography and we think this is the niche for us.
If you had to choose one word to describe yourself/your business, what would it be?
What is something that most people don’t know about your business/you?
PERSONALLY: I come from a golf family. I have made two holes-in-one, one while playing collegiate golf at New Mexico State University and one a few years later. My father was a PGA Tour professional and began teaching me to play golf at eight years of age.
PROFESSIONALLY: Within the first few months of starting my calligraphy business, I received a commission to do the wedding calligraphy for the daughter of Swanee Hunt, the U.S. Ambassador to Austria. The bride was marrying in Denver and I was hired through a local wedding planner. I was never as nervous and unprepared for any project as this one. But I viewed it as a challenge that would make me better… and it did.
Tell us why you think you are a popular choice for brides and grooms.
Many of my brides and grooms become like family during the span of our projects together. Some I continue to work with even years after their wedding. I think it is because I strive to be responsive, reliable, prompt, professional and creative. They have entrusted me to be a part of their wedding planning and I want their experience to be effortless and enjoyable, knowing the stresses of wedding responsibilities.
What is your one must have tool to have on hand when you are working?
A slew of brightly-colored Holbein Artists’ gouaches (opaque watercolors) from Opera Pink and Lilac to Leaf Green and Katsura Blue that I use for all of my calligraphy projects. I find that having the ability to mix colors for the right consistency gives me more flexibility than working with bottled inks.
