What inspired you to start your business?
I didn’t start out with the intention of creating a wedding-based business, I created my first anniversary vase about 5 years ago for a friend, and when a customer asked me for an idea for a special wedding gift I threw out the idea of a vase carved with the names of the bride and groom with the wedding date, and it slowly became the basis for my ceramics store, Maid of Clay Ceramics.
What options for customization do you offer?
My vases are all about making it custom and personalized. I’ve had people request small symbols on the vase that have personal meaning to the bride and groom. I also give the option of having a short message inscribed on the bottom of the vase. It can be something that has meaning to the couple, or if it is being given as a gift, a special message from the giver.
If you could give one tip to couples who are planning a wedding, what would it be?
Other than set a budget and stick to it, I don’t have any tips for actual wedding planning because it is so personal to the couple. The only tip I can give the couple is to snack BEFORE the reception because once the reception starts the chances of sitting and eating are pretty slim.
What is something that most people don’t know about your biz/you?
I often stay up until 5 or 6 in the morning working on my vases. It’s such a quiet time, no phones ringing and no distractions. Carving clay is almost like meditation – you can’t think of anything else but what you’re carving.
What is your one must-have tool to have on-hand when you’re working?
It has to be the Exacto knife I use for carving. Actually, it is a surgical tool which is a finer, thinner version of an Exacto knife.
If you had to choose one word to describe yourself/your business what would it be?
Personal. Both the item and my interaction with the buyer.
5 Things that make you happy?
Laying in my warm bed on a cold, rainy morning and knowing I don’t have to get out of bed if I don’t want to.
Coming up with a new idea that I haven’t seen anywhere else.
Receiving a heartfelt thank you letter.
Getting caught up on my to-do list.
A great meal with friends and the time to relax and talk.
Is there anything else you’d like to share?
I am truly a one-person business. I do the throwing of the vase, the firing, the glazing, the packing, the shipping. Anyone who receives one of my pieces is supporting the handmade artisan movement.
Don’t you just LOVE it all? Well, hold onto your seats! Maid of Clay will be back tomorrow with a fabulous giveaway for WedLoft readers!! Check back in tomorrow for the details and to enter for a chance to win :)
