Q: My fiancé and I were engaged recently. We are ecstatic and excited to let the whole world know. I am told there is a time frame to consider if and when announcing the engagement in the newspaper. We are planning a wedding for Valentine’s Day in two years. When can we announce our engagement?
A: Congratulations on your engagement. The general rule of thumb for announcing engagements is first your close family and friends should be told. Then, formal announcements can be sent up to a year prior to the wedding, but not less than six weeks before. Lastly, you will need to contact your local paper as it will have its own guidelines for running a newspaper announcement (including pictures, wording, length, etc.).
